Cassie

The older matriarch in the background

Cassie is a 17-year-old Thoroughbred mare and a quiet but elegant presence at Groundwork Collective. She came to me after a broodmare lease and is currently the only boarded horse on the property. Though she’s retired, she holds a meaningful place in the herd and in the daily rhythm of life here.

  • Cassie is a 17-year-old Thoroughbred mare and a quiet, steady presence at Groundwork Collective. She spent the first part of her life as an off-the-track Thoroughbred and was later retrained as an eventer. After two suspensory injuries, she stepped away from her athletic career and eventually came to me following a broodmare lease. Though fully retired, Cassie remains a graceful and grounding part of the herd.

  • Cassie has lived a full and varied life. From the racetrack to the eventing arena, she brought forward movement, try, and heart to everything she did. After two suspensory ligament injuries, her performance career came to a natural close. She later transitioned into a broodmare lease home, and now enjoys a peaceful retirement here, where she is simply allowed to be herself.

  • Cassie is calm, perceptive, and has a quiet confidence about her. She prefers to stay out of the drama but maintains her place with subtle authority. She communicates clearly, keeps firm boundaries, and has a special softness toward young or uncertain horses. She often steps into a quiet babysitter role without being asked.

  • Visitors often ask about Cassie, curious about the elegant bay mare standing just outside the spotlight. The truth is simple, she doesn’t need a job to belong. Her presence is enough and she is good friends with Roog, our oldest gelding. Cassie is here because she matters, because she has earned rest, and because we believe that every horse deserves to live the life they need, not just the one they were trained for.
